Brothers and Sunshine

With the morning sun streaming through their bedroom window gently warming their skin, the two brothers - my little guys - sat on the bed and read books together.

One bigger, one smaller. Both extremely cute with very large feet...

They love each other's company.
I love that they love each other's company.
They don't mind that there is no TV for them to watch.
I love it that they don't mind there is no TV.
They have so many toys, books, games, puzzles and each other's company to occupy their time. What more could you want?

Luca TJ is proving to be a bit of a whizz at games of memory and jigsaw puzzles. I love the look of pride on his face when he wins at memory {even when I'm truthfully trying my hardest...!} and when he completes the puzzles all on his own.

This has been easier than I thought which I am SUPER pleased about.
We are on Day 2 of school holidays and I end today feeling confident that I can do this.
This = being 33 weeks pregnant and keeping two energetic little guys entertained without the helping hand of  Children's TV or DVD's or my husband to fall back on (until 6pm when he gets home from work ready for games of "Get You's" and bearing a laptop {which is mostly for my entertainment/bloggin purposes}).

I just hope it's sunny again tomorrow. And the next day. And the next day. And the next day......

Polesden Lacey

When you're a 3 year old boy and you're about to have pancakes for breakfast, it's a public holiday and there's a big day of fun planned ahead, why not celebrate by putting your mamma's best friend's waterproof mascara all over your face, her mirror and the walls in her room? What a great way to start the day!

And when you, the Mamma, discover your darling angelic 3 year old with his war-painted face, try not to laugh at him because he might get a bit upset. He already knows his face, wall and mirror painting is probably not to everyone's liking and doesn't need you laughing and pointing at him right now...

But a good form of punishment would be to leave it on his face all day.
And that is what we did.

He ate pancakes with his mascara war-paint on.
He even visited a millionaire's estate situated in the English Countryside with his mascara war-paint on.

Truth be told, I just couldn't be bothered ran out of time to scrub it off before we had to leave, so he was stuck with his mascara war-painted face for the day.

Our day trip to the countryside took us to a 1,400 acre estate called Polesden Lacey which is situated on the North Downs in Surrey.

Now this is how I always imagined the English Countryside to be. Rolling green hills, big old trees scattered through open fields, patches of forest, the odd mound or two surrounded by a crop of trees which one is best advised to avoid, especially around the times of twilight and day-break in case one accidentally finds oneself transported to a different time and place altogether...

With walkways open to the general public we were able to casually stroll down wee country lanes.

There was running down hills and rolling in the grass (well, some of us were able to do this...!)

We were even able to get up close and personal to real live sheep!
(yes, I know dad, if we were living in New Zealand Luca would be shearing sheep at his age...)
The thing is, this English Countryside reminded me so much of typical Waikato Farmland it was almost painful.
MENTAL NOTE: don't visit the English countryside if you are feeling homesick and missing the wide open beautiful spaces of New Zealand. I mean, you might as well just give yourself a papercut and pour lemon juice on it while you're at it.
We let our children be as 'One' with nature - you'd think these poor deprived city kids had never seen moss, a stick or wooden gates before...
And of course there was plenty of hills providing the men amongst us the opportunity to show a display of their masculinity by having buggy races up the hills.
We then took a look around the extensive grounds of Polesden Lacey estate. Very impressive if I must say so myself! I couldn't imagine mowing all those lawns though... there'd have to be a LOT of cold beer waiting in the fridge for me if I was to take on that job!
I'm sure you can only imagine our delighted surprise when we stumbled across a wee jazz band providing entertainment and helping to create a wonderfully relaxing and cosy 'Life Is Good' atmosphere to a perfect day out.
Such a lovely day to finish off a fun-filled long weekend - special times and memories with family and friends, making us wonder why we don't get out and do this more often!

Thankful Thursday

"Gratitude is the best Attitude"

There has been too much of this lately

And not enough of this.

Thank you for all the lovely encouraging comments - it's a relief to know that it's quite normal to find motherhood very hard going!

It still amazes me how two of the cutest kids in the world have the ability to drive me so far up the wall.

But anyway, today has been a new day and with it came a new start, new happenings that provided a vast range of new opportunities for a reaction, new choices. And I am pleased to report I {mostly} chose well.

I had decided early on today that my attitude would be a thankful one. After all it is Thursday!...

So hang on to your seats - there's a whole lot of thankfulness about to be unleashed!

Today I am thankful:

1. ...for the safe arrival of my new neice!

Welcome to Pearl Ruth, 10lb 2oz of delicious perfection!
I love her.
I want to kiss those beautiful chubby cheeks!
I am so proud of my gorgeous sister-in-law and my amazing brother. They are such awesome, proud parents.
It sucks being on the other side of the world right now...

But back to being THANKFUL!...

2. ...that I got to go for an uninterrupted 9 mile run today while the boys slept in the buggy. Bring on the Loch Ness Marathon - only 8 weeks to go!

3 ....that I have a strong healthy body that enables me to get outside and go running, to play with my boys and to help carry the groceries.

4. ...that Beni is possibly the happiest baby in the world and that he's always smiling (except for when his brother hits him over the head with a tractor, or bites his finger, or stands on his head, or practices his WWF moves on him...)

5. ...that Luca seems to have a cracker of a personality.

This morning he 'noticed' that I didn't have a diddle... had to happen at some stage I guess?
So I was busy explaining to him that "Mama doesn't have a diddle but Beni has a diddle and Luca has a diddle..."
And then Luca cuts in saying "...and Papa has a big diddle" (said with a low and gravelly voice).
How do I respond to that??...

6. ...that we have our family holiday in Italy in 3 weeks time!

7. ...that I've got used to the taste of soy milk - and actually quite like it - as I can't have any dairy at the moment. Porridge made with soy milk, raisins, chopped apricots and chopped almonds is a glorious start to the day and yet has a low GI value. We like that yes we do.

8. ...that I can now go and have a deep and peaceful sleep which will no doubt end with snuggly children in bed with us (this is a good thing by the way!)

What are you thankful for today?

Parlez-vous Kiwi?

When you receive an invitation to a wedding in the South of France you may as well take a few extra days out there to get a feel for the place right? Well, it would be rude not to.

And so we did.

How do I sum up four marvellous days in the South of France?

Merveilleux
Magnifique
Extraordinaire
J'aime pan au chocolat
Oui oui merci au revoir

Austin was unfortunately working over the weekend so Luca, Beni and I travelled with the boy's "surrogate" parents, affectionately known as Batty and Sezzy. My sister and brother from another mother.

And oh my goodness do I love them!

Like with any family, they take us as we are, they know our good points and bad points, they know our children can be incredibly cute as well as incredibly annoying. We don't put on the airs and graces for them, they get the raw reality and yet they still love us and actually want to spend time with us! They are precious, amazingly wonderful, invaluable, unconditional people who have enriched our lives. Seriously.

And so, off to the South of France we went to a little town called Bollene. Very cute. Quaint. French.
We arrived on a Wednesday and the wedding wasn't until Saturday so had a few days up our sleeves in which to do anything that took our fancy. And there was actually heaps of things to do in and around the area.

Our first evening was spent by the banks of the river Lez...
Eating fresh baguette, cured meats, olives, cheese, fresh and 'oh-so-full-of-flavour-you-think-you might-forget-to-breathe' tomatos. And of course vin rouge to wash it all down.

Our mornings were generally spent with an easy stroll into the little town to partake of fresh pastries and coffee. Then we were ready to explore!

Our first port of call was Pont Du Gard which is the remains of a 50km aquaduct that ran between Uzès and Nîmes. The aqueduct was constructed by the Roman Empire in the middle of the first century A.D. It was constructed entirely without the use of mortar. The aqueduct's stones – some of which weigh up to 6 tons – were precisely cut to fit perfectly together eliminating the need for mortar. *Thank you Wikipedia*
It's pretty darn impressive and it was amazing to see and be able to touch something that is nearly 2,000 years old. I was quite smitten.

We were able to swim just upstream of Pont du Gard so even though the water was rather on the chilly side Luca stripped down to his undies and there was no stopping him!
Stones were skimmed.
Stones were thrown at little French girls who dared to wander close enough...
And then there was cuddles in a nice comfy dry towel in the arms of two of Luca's favourite people in the whole world.

With our awesome ability with the French language eating out was.... interesting.

I thought I ordered three Kronenbourg (beer), but we were given this...
... which is a crumble of some sort... must sound like Kronenbourg I guess...?
We had to laugh.
We had to eat it.
It was very tasty indeed but not ideal for starting off a night of 'fine dining'...
A waiter who spoke english came up to us at the end of the evening and asked us why we ordered dessert first... I was tempted to say that's the way we eat in New Zealand, but had to admit it was because we are terrible at speaking French.
He laughed.
He went and told all the people inside.
They all laughed.
So we did the haka and left.
(not really, but that would have been a good comeback huh?)

The day before the wedding we went somewhere especially for Luca - a Crocodile Farm!
This freaky little white guy is an albino crocodile. There are only 25 of them currently in existence and 2 of them were at this particular Croc Farm.

I was expecting there to maybe be about 3 or 4 decent sized crocs in a big glass cage or something similar.
What I was not expecting was the 100+ maHOOsive crocodiles in a very large glass house where you actually get to walk over their living space on wooden bridges and pathways....
They are freaky, lazy, ancient creatures with lots of teeth and bad tempers. But Luca LOVED them!

Beni was of course keen to get in on the action as well. Fearless he is. Fearless.

And how could you leave without a momento? Fortunately this is a much less frightful version of the real thing.
Henry the Crocodile (said 'On-REE') is now a firm part of the family. Luca has never been a soft toy boy, but he is now. Even when he goes off to sleep he asks for his muzzy and Henry. Woah. I hope that croc realises what a priveleged toy he is.

And our next rendezvous? Well, when in France...
Chateauneuf du Pape = Heaven on earth.
A very expensive Heaven on earth.
My husband's favourite French wine.
Unfortunately, because we flew with only carry-on luggage, I couldn't bring a bottle back for him. So I got him the next best thing - Chateauneuf du Pape chocolates! (all the women cheer!)
They are still sitting unopened on his bedside cabinet.
Men really are from Venus.

For dinner that evening we had Kebabs with an 18 Euro bottle of Chateauneuf du Pape.
Classy. Very classy.

As luck would have it our very dear and gorgeous friends who are living in Texas just happened to be in the South of France for another wedding that same weekend. Through numerous text messages and phonecalls we eventually managed to meet up with them and their wee baby bump in Orange (it's a town...) for a very quick but oh so very sweet catchup before we each had to dash off to our different weddings.
Random but AWESOME to see them.

Because Pango and Anna-Kate are two of Austin's favourite things I once again had a very envious husband stuck in the UK paying Heavy Metal bands (which, coincidentally, are two of his least favourite things. That being paying people and heavy metal music...)

And so, The Wedding. A very beautiful wedding. The occasion that gave us the excuse to spend four magnifique days in France.
Set in the outskirts of Bollene, the wedding was held at a homestead with beautiful big grounds and trees all around.
The day was hot.
The sky was blue.
Champagne flowed freely.
The bride was radiant in a gorgeous white dress.
The groom was handsome in suit and stripey socks.

Beni had all the ladies at his beck and call when he turned up in his pinstriped waistcoat and trousers because it was too hot to wear a shirt and shoes. He looked like he was a Boy Band member. TOO CUTE!

Luca had Henry the Crocodile with him so he was happy.

I had my best friend and the odd glass of champagne with me so I was happy.

After nearly 8 years of being in London I am still in awe of the fact that you can just pop over to any European country for the weekend. It's awesome.

And as the summer sun starts smiling on England and the rest of Europe, so my heart and soul are smiling within me at this good and wonderful life I have with my beautiful family and friends.
