The 5 Year Plan

Although I hear it's a great idea, I've never been the kind of girl to set out a plan of attack for the next 5 years.

Probably should have, but never did. Hey-Ho.

Nearly 2 years ago two of my sisters and I were on a flight from London to Morocco for a few days of 'Sisters' time when I came across an article in the 'Psychology' magazine which talked about writing a 5 year plan, but with a twist...
They suggested you get one or a few of your good friends/family to write your 5 year plan for you. It has to be people you trust and ones that know you and can see your potential, often where you don't see it yourself...

So that's exactly what we did. We grabbed some notepaper, put our name at the top and wrote each other's 5 year plan. And it was brilliant! I've already achieved one of them which was to have another baby... easy.

Easier than setting up my own business or learning Italian!...

When I was back in New Zealand earlier this year we had a 'Sisters' date in Taupo (I have 3 sisters and 1 brother). It was a 'Sisters' date because our brother lives in the South Island and mum and dad were having a 'Mum & Dad' date at the cinema and were meeting up with us for drinks afterwards. I was remembering back to when we wrote our 5 year plans together a couple of years back and suggested maybe we could do it again now that all the sisters are together. So we asked for more napkins and got busy writing each other's 5 year plans.

Oh and I loved it!!

Not only is it exciting to read what's listed on your plan that has been written by those who know you so well, but also to be able to put down ideas, dreams, very realistic possibilities for those you hold dear who maybe have been too scared to pursue a passion, haven't dared to dream too big because they can't see the potential in themselves which is blatantly obvious to others. It's awesome. It's encouraging. It's exciting.

And I've still got my napkin from some waterside restaurant in Taupo, NZ.

So here's but a few of the points that were written on my 5 year plan - I won't share them all because I don't want anyone to steal some of the INGENIOUS ideas that were given to me!...
- learn Italian to speaking fluently
- write and record songs (Oooooo that's hitting a nerve...)
- move country
- run a marathon
- own a business in Italy
- own a vineyard
- learn how to make wine

Interesting...
Exciting!
Need to get started.

Maybe this is something you can try with a group of trusted friends/family? A girls night in over a bottle of wine.
You may be surprised and freshly inspired by what they come up with!

  1. We still have our napkins as well! They are wonderful. Wonderful memories, but also wonderful words - to think others might put to words something they think you're capable of actually achieving.
