Gems Of The Week

Precious, Priceless, Pockets of Happiness during my week.

I really like this part - taking the time to look back on the good in my week.
So often there are moments that happen and I think "Oh that's really awesome/sweet/cool/cute/lovely", but then that moment quickly gets swallowed up by life and dirty nappies...

I'm recognising my need to STOP and really take in those moments when they happen, and don't let them slip by.
A big reason for me doing this blog is to record them so I don't forget!

So here are my "Gems" this week:

:: Beni is walking and he's so proud of himself. And Luca loves to be sitting across from him with his arms wide open, ready for the embrace at the end of the 5-step journey.
 :: Luca's fond caresses of my baby bump.

It delights me that he is so interested and 'aware' of the "baby in Mamma's tummy". As I have been starting to look more pregnant and now have an obvious 'bump', he has taken to patting the bump and just today asked if he could sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to baby.
As you can imagine my heart completely melted right then and there.

:: This week Austin has been working from home which has been marvellous on many accounts, especially because it means I can take afternoon naps, loving this!
And it also means I don't have to be the only one changing the pooey nappies...

:: January 5th saw Austin and I celebrate our 9th Wedding Anniversary!
My husband is so wonderful. He's an amazing dad, this is obvious by the way our boys just adore him.
He's my best friend and I feel like the luckiest woman alive to be married to him!

:: I am loving the special one-on-one time I have in the mornings with Beni-Boo now that Luca's back at school.
Everything is funny for him at the moment and he is such a delightful little guy. So full of life with a cheeky little sparkle in his eye.
I hope you are able to take some time to recognise and be thankful for the Gems in your week also.

Have a Happy Weekend! X

Gems of the week

Precious, Priceless, Pockets of Happiness during my week.

Or should I say, Gems of the last few weeks...? It's been a good few weeks since I last listed my 'Gems of the Week' but that doesn't mean I haven't been noticing them, appreciating them and soaking them up!

I'm quickly writing this after making 3 different batches of Christmas Cookies for our neighbours.
I've still got a couple of gifts to finish before Christmas Day - but that's okay, I've still got 2 days...!
This whole 'Handmade Christmas' thang is great and incredibly satisfying, but also incredibly time-consuming...

:::

~ A large cardboard box that packaged a delivery became the source of much entertainment and laughter for a week plus some. Who needs numerous and expensive toys when your child is ever so happy playing with a cardboard box?

~ My Beni-Boo is now standing and has taken his first steps! He's very proud of himself and adores the praise we give him when he shows off his new tricks.

~ I have discovered a Sarah McLachlan album called 'Wintersong' that I am now completely hooked on. Christmas and Winter songs (but mainly Christmas) that are so hauntingly beautiful they will make you want to curl up by the fire with a glass of red and your knitting. (If you're a knitter...).
This song of 'Silent Night' is what I've been playing when it's the boy's nap time. The first time I tried this tactic the boys were giggling at each other across their room and generally not being very sleepy, so I put this song on and literally within 1 minute they had settled down and were drifting off to sleep. Genius.

~ I'm once again loving and completely fascinated by Luca's attention to detail. Every car gets parked with meticulous care, all facing the same direction.

~ Much to my husband's disgust I've been enjoying a Cheeky Cheeseburger from Mickey D's of late. I blame it on pregnancy cravings. I don't normally enjoy a cheeky cheeseburger because I'm not actually allowed to set foot in McD's. These are Austin's "rules". Anti-globalisation and all that.
But woah. Oh my goodness. I've forgotten how good they taste!...

~ Luca has been leaving me flabbergasted with some of the things he has been saying.
The other day we were sitting in the lounge and Beni was by the Christmas tree trying to look like he wasn't touching it and I noticed a look of fondness cross Luca's face as he watched his brother and then he says "Beni is so cute and soft".
And I couldn't agree more. Beni is cute and soft.
Then just yesterday he brings out the phrase that beats all other phrases by a mile. The completely impulsive and out-of-the-blue "I love you Mamma" followed by a kiss.
Well, I could have danced for joy! Those four words were such a sweet sound to hear and pulled every string of my heart.
I don't need anything for Christmas - I've just been given a most wonderful gift and I couldn't ask for anything more right now!

Gems of the Week

Precious, Priceless, Pockets of Happiness during my week.

How vital it is to sit down at the end of the week and think, really think, about all the good stuff that has taken place in the past 7 days. Things that could quite easily be looked over, taken for granted. Things that are enjoyed at the time and yet are easily forgotten in the busy-ness.
I know it's good for me to focus on those pockets of happiness, to record them, to be able to share them, to be able to read back on them.
It once again brings to the foreground of my mind the fact that I am so very blessed.

:::

~ We had our scan for Bambino Numero Tre on Wednesday and I am pleased to report that all is well and good! It's little heart was happily and healthily pumping away, everything is formed as it should be.
It is perfect.
Even though we have been through this all before with the other pregnancies it is still an absolutely incredible thing to see your little one for the first time on the screen. The reality and the emotions kick in. I am in love already.

~ This little guy is showing us his cheeky personality more every day. He is happy, content and loves his older brother with every fibre of his being.

~ During the week I watched the Cheryl Cole interview with Piers Morgan and absolutely bawled my face off. It felt good. I now highly rate her (SISTERS: before you mock me, you need to watch this and form your own opinion).

~ Although I have been suffering from bad morning sickness this week (why all of a sudden more intense?) it has made me have to stop, sit down, breathe. And so I have been getting lots of knitting done. This is a good thing because not only do I have LOTS of knitting projects to complete before Christmas, but it also makes me chill out because it is such a relaxing craft. If your stress-levels are high, take up knitting.

~ Luca has been into everything this week and, as a result, totally doing my head in. He has boundless energy - the type I have been so lacking in this week... But at night when he wants to come and snuggle in bed with me all is forgotten (except for my feelings of regret at having lost my temper with him 86 times that day...).
And forgive me, but I still haven't been able to let go of my feelings of extreme fury at Luca for doing a MASSIVE poo in the bath last night. When you are suffering from morning sickness the very last thing you want to be doing is scooping turds out of the bath plughole. Take my word for it.
And yet, when he wanted to go to sleep in our bed last night because Papa was away, I couldn't help but be so very grateful for this little man. Thankful for each breathy little sigh. Thankful for his body warmth. Thankful that he is mine.

~ I just LOVE snuggling my little guys in bed (and the big guy of course!). In the mornings both the boys end up in our bed (if they're not there already) and then Austin and Luca get up to make breakfast, Luca brings Beni's bottle through to him, I snuggle up to the wee Beni-Boo while he skulls back his milk, his eyes half-closed and dreamy and then we have more cuddles and tickles. By then the coffee's ready and the day is ready for us.
I love love love this morning routine. It's totally the best way to start the day.
Today after we had dropped Luca off at school Beni and I came home and immediately went back to bed for more sleep. I don't normally do this but I let Beni sleep in bed with me during our nap and it was just DEVINE! I didn't sleep for a whole lot of our nap time, I spent a lot of it just staring at my wee Boo while my heart melted and I fell deeper in love with him. I didn't think that was possible.
Check out that one mean tooth he has on the bottom while he has FIVE teeth up top!

~ I recently came across this T-Mobile commercial which I thought you'd all enjoy. I bet you can't help but smile as you watch this.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Big Boy's Big Day

There were no tears from either of us. Just lots of big smiles from a very proud Big Boy and his mamma.

Luca's first day at 'school' {which is actually like a nursery or kindergarten as it is 9am-12pm, 5 days a week but they wear a uniform!}was something I have been anticipating with many mixed emotions, as I'm sure every other mother also experiences.

I have been looking forward to:
- Luca being able to get out of the small space that is our London flat, letting him run around and scream as much as he wants with other kids his own age and meeting new friends.
- seeing him in his new school uniform
{No confidence issues for this child}

- having quieter mornings at home
- having some special Mamma & Beni time

I have not been looking forward to:
- walking away and having to leave him at school because he is only 3 years old!!...

But hey, we are in England and this is how they do things here and - after all - he will come away with a very cute English accent.

Being Luca's first day of school I got to stay with him as part of a settling-in period, which was a good thing because we only just got back from our 2 week holiday in Italy in the early hours of this morning so we were all feeling a little fragile...

He was a little unsure at first so sat on my knee and gave me cuddles for a couple of minutes which was nice.
{I am needed!}
 ... until he saw the toy dinosaurs and then he was off!
And low and behold, guess who was one of the toy dinosaurs...
"Look Mamma, it's Aunty Gretchie!" {otherwise known as Luca's Party Entertainment}.
Oh how I chortled.

And so I passed the hours by proudly watching my little Big Boy make himself familiar at his new school. I love the way he quite often stands and stares at other children, sussing them out, watching how they do things.

I watched from a distance with a smile on my face as he took himself to the toilet, did the Big Boy Standing Up type of wees, pulled his undies and trousers up, washed soaped rinsed and dried his hands before heading out to play once more.

I watched from a distance, itching to be the teacher as she sat down with him at the computer and showed him how to use the mouse to draw pictures and paint.

I watched from a distance as he sat down with another teacher who helped him spread cream cheese on a biscuit and then place bits of dried fruit on it to create a face.

I watched from a distance, stifling a giggle, as he devoured that biscuit with much appreciation.

And all the while I kept thinking how blimmin CUTE my little Big Boy is!

And you know what? It made me see that, actually, we have done a great job thus far at raising this little guy.
He is well-mannered, sweet, loves to laugh, full of life, tender, thoughtful, imaginative, playful, creative, determined...

As much as I am looking forward to having a bit of 'space' in the mornings, I am also feeling rather saddened by the fact that my first born baby who I pushed out not that long ago is already starting school!

Another benefit I can see of Luca going to school in the mornings is that he came home today happy and exhausted, thus having a hearty lunch and a long afternoon nap.

Yessssssss.
I like. I like this a lot.

3 Days with 3 Under 3

My neighbour asked if I could look after her little girl, who is 1 month older than Beni, while she was at work for 3 days this week. She usually has other childcare arrangements in place but was unable to secure these for this week. I figured this wouldn't be a problem as they quite often come over for coffee so her baby (baby K) is quite familiar with me and the little guys.

I have never really been very 'maternal' or given to being 'clucky'. I used to mostly avoid little people as much as I could, or be quite happy to give them back to their parents as soon as they started crying or made any rumbling sounds from down-under.

When I was pregnant with Luca there was obviously a little bit of concern on my part... What if I didn't like my baby? There was noone to give him back to! I had to deal with the poos myself (or hand him over to Austin... which happened a lot!) and I would have to settle him down myself when he cries.
I mean, what is it that you do with children anyway?!?! That is still the million dollar question.

What Do You Do With Children?!?

I remember being a very good and confident babysitter in my teens.
Feed, bath and put to bed 5 children? No problem. As long as I get to watch a movie and eat your biscuits afterwards.

But then came my twenties and with it lots of selfishness. "Well, please keep your children away from me. Surely there is a teenager scraped for cash who can babysit for you? I have fingernails that need painting so am absolutely unavailable."

Late twenties I got married and moved to London. Six years later Luca "unexpectedly" came along. Then two years after that little Beni-Boo.
I would just like to say that giving birth to my sons has been 2 of the 3 Best Things I have ever done.
The third being marrying my Austin.

I love my little guys with everything I have. They have completely revolutionised my world and made me a better (less selfish) person.

Just needed to let y'all know that.

Anyhoo, let's get onto my experience of 3 days with 3 under 3.

So this is how it went:

DAY 1
While texting my mum that morning I mentioned that I was looking after an extra baby for the next three days.
She text me back saying "Goodness. Are you okay to do that?"...
Ow. Ow OW mother!
My reply: "How do u mean? R u calling me a mental case?!..."
She didn't reply to that question. Interesting...
So, making doubly sure that I had taken my medication I psyched myself up to do this thing!
As it would happen, 30 minutes after baby K's mum left there was an explosion of poos all up her back. Dry-retching ensued but I managed the nappy change and complete change of clothes through an out-of-body experience. Those come in handy sometimes...
The rules were:
1. Luca's room for Luca and his toys
2. The lounge for Beni and baby K and their toys
I had to keep them seperate otherwise there would be cars/trucks/helicopters smashed over heads if cars/trucks/helicopters were touched by any baby fingers...
Mid morning the babies were bundled in the buggy and Luca on his Thomas bike ready for a walk in the sunshine, only to discover the lift was out of order. We live on the 4th floor in an apartment building.
Damn.
I spent about 5 minutes considering my options, which included lifting the buggy with the children in it down the 4 flights of stairs... I tried this option and could lift the buggy for about 1.6 seconds but that was it.
So back inside was the only other option.
Double Damn.
But thankfully day-time children's TV came to the rescue
Lunch time saw me spoon-feeding 2 babies with 2 yogurts and 2 spoons. Felt like super-mum. I could so manage twins!...
Amazingly enough, afternoon naps all happened at the same time!
Only Luca eventually decided not to sleep and was playing quietly with his cars until he got bored of that and decided to jump in Beni's cot instead so he, too, was now awake. Laughter and giggles resounded from their room while baby K slept like...well, a baby.

STATS:
3pm = Baby K's mum arrived for collection.
Nappy = clean
Clothes = clean
Bumps & Bruises = 0
High Fives to myself for doing such a great job = 1 big one
Chances of proving my mother wrong = Very High.

DAY 2
Whilst changing another morning poo of baby K I forgot about my porridge that I'd left cooking on the gas hob which ended up having it's ass severely burnt.
Gutted.
I was really looking forward to my yummy oats made with soy milk, chopped prunes, apricots, a dash of cinnamon and runny honey drizzled on top. My stomach was literally groaning for it. Very angry about the waste and the fact I was eventually going to have to scrub the pot.
With the lift now back in working order a visit to the Toy Library got us out of the house for the morning, babies in the buggy and Luca walking beside me holding my hand singing the Toy Library song I made up with the intention of {hopefully} teaching him to share:

"When we go to the Toy Li-i-i-i-i-i-i-bary
There's trucks and trains and cars and sand.
When we go to the Toy Li-i-i-i-i-i-i-bary
They're not Luca's toys they're everybody's toys!"

Afternoon naps? Baby K fell asleep on the way home from the Toy Library and didn't wake until after the boys had been watered and fed.
Luca didn't want to sleep {as per usual} and was getting Beni hyped up and giggling {as per usual}.
During this time baby K was feeling a bit fragile but didn't want to be held and was crying whenever her dummy fell out, so I eventually stopped picking it up and putting it back in for her. Instead I made myself a cup of coffee, stood in the kitchen and ate FOUR chocolate biscuits. By biscuit number 2 she had stopped crying.
Result.
Unfortunately that only lasted for about 2 minutes before there was more tears and so I caved and gave her the dummy again. Little button was just needing her mum. I didn't blame her.
I was needing my mum too.

STATS:
3:30pm = Baby K's mum arrived for collection.
Nappy = clean {only just changed it in time...}
Clothes = slightly grubby
Bumps & Bruises = 2
High Fives to myself for doing such a great job = 0
Chances of proving my mother wrong = Slim to none

Once again I was overcome by a strange craving for whiskey and a cigarette and am wondering whether my mother was right afterall...

DAY 3
Started the morning with threatening to tape Luca to the wall - he didn't think that was a good idea.
He was wanting me to play cars with him but I couldn't leave the little ones in the lounge by themselves.
Managed to snatch a couple of minutes here and there to race cars with him, but sure enough, whenever I did that one of the babies would fall over and bump their head.
Managed to snatch a couple of minutes here and there to go to the toilet, but sure enough, whenever I did that one of the babies would fall over and bump their head.
Managed to feed them their lunch at the same time then strapped the babies in the buggy, Luca on Thomas bike and got out into the sunshine for a 'Discovery' walk and quick playground visit before nap time.
Both the boys went down for a nap at the same time with no dramas while baby K remained awake. I was a bit annoyed about this because I would have loved some time to myself which I only get when the boys very rarely have their afternoon nap at the same time.
While I was hanging out the washing baby K looked directly at me and filled her nappies.
I could see what she was going to do and I was saying "Don't do it! Don't do it!"
But she did it. A big one.
I was wondering how long I could hold off from changing her nappy and that maybe her mum would arrive to collect her soon...
I eventually caved, took a deep breath and changed her nappy.
So here's the thing about little girls - I don't know how to go about cleaning all their bits 'down there'...
Faecal matter seems to get everywhere...

STATS:
3pm = Baby K's mum arrived for collection {5 minutes after I'd finished the pooey nappy change... damn}
Nappy = clean {just... but so should have waited that little bit longer}
Clothes = clean-ish
Bumps & Bruises = 1
High Fives to myself for doing such a great job = 1/2
Chances of proving my mother wrong = No chance. She was right. I'm a mental case.
But, now that I've thought about it, I do actually quite dig on children.
{although I would never consider a job as a nanny}

Just me & my Beni-Boo

While Luca has his long naps in the afternoons, Beni and I are usually given a special hour or two where it's just the two of us.
Hanging out.
Reading books.
Singing songs.
Doing lots of laughing and giggling and a ridiculous amount of kisses and cuddles.

Oh how I love this little guy.

Have a great weekend! X
